TAs and instructors frequently struggle to engage student in their mathematics classrooms, often fighting against awkward silences after asking a question; however, instructors and TAs can improve student motivation and participation by devoting time and thought towards shaping their classroom environment. We will discuss ways that careful lesson planning and thoughtful communication (both verbal and nonverbal) can create a classroom environment that promotes student engagement.
