A major theme in number theory is understanding the solutions to a system of polynomial equations. When working over a finite field, there will usually be plenty of solutions and one of the main tasks is to determine how many there are. We will describe a generating function, called a zeta function, associated to counting points on a variety. These zeta functions have several amazing properties, called the Weil conjectures, which are in part motivated by the Riemann zeta function.
