We will discuss a generalization of the notion of ring in which the underlying set is replaced by an object of a suitable category. The notion arises in algebraic topology under the name "Hopf ring". We will go over several examples of a combinatorial or algebraic nature, including one involving symmetric functions and another involving the braid hyperplane arrangement.
