Growing out of the ideas of representation stability, the theory of FI-modules has been the subject of much study in recent years. One reason for this is the ubiquity of stable representation theory. We will review the fundamental notions of the theory of FI-modules and their relationship to representation stability, providing examples along the way. Finally, we will give an example of a new FI-module appearing in the study of free group automorphisms and consider its properties.
