After an overview of phenomena of climate variability, the general ideas behind a (stochastic) dynamical systems approach to understand these phenomena are discussed. A hierarchy of models available and the methodology to analyse these models is presented. Using conceptual models, several basic mechanisms of climate variability will be illustrated.
