The Springer resolution

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 - 4:30pm
Malott 406

The Springer Resolution is a construction that involves so many concepts from Geometry and Representation Theory that it is simultaneously a great example of resolutions of singularities and moment maps. We will discuss this construction, focusing on the simplest case, the cotangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^1$ mapping onto nilpotent $2\times 2$ matrices where we will make everything explicit, so no previous knowledge of representation theory is necessary. Then we will talk about complete intersections, and in the end we will define semisimple Lie algebras.

Refreshments will be served in the lounge at 4:00 PM.
