The theory of distributions and the creation of global mathematics
Thursday, October 29, 2015 - 4:30pm
Malott 406
The theory of distributions, proposed by French mathematician Laurent Schwartz on the heels of the Second World War, was among the first mathematical theories to be developed almost from the start by an intercontinental community of researchers. I will explain the historical circumstances that made this possible, linking them to changes in what mathematical theories meant and how they were understood in the mid-twentieth century.
Refreshments will be served at 4:00 PM.
