I will give an introduction to symplectic capacities, starting with the definition of a symplectic form. I will explain Gromov's symplectic camel, which shows why symplectomorphisms are harder to come by than volume preserving diffeomorphisms. I will conclude with some relatively recent work of McDuff and Schlenck giving a still mysterious link between symplectic geometry and elementary number theory.
