Dynamical Systems Seminar

Canards are counter-intuitive trajectories of fast/slow systems that remain near repelling slow manifolds for a long time. The talk will begin with a primer on canards in smooth fast/slow systems. Recent developments about the nature of canards in nonsmooth systems will also be discussed. Systems corresponding to a discontinuous vector field can exhibit behavior, e.g., sliding trajectories, that are not seen in smooth systems. The talk will conclude by considering the implications of both stable and unstable sliding on the existence of canard solutions.
