We consider a natural family of discontinuous area-preserving maps on the cylinder, corresponding to a switching Hamiltonian system. Despite inapplicability of KAM theory, one observes (numerically) bounded energy dynamics. We give a partial explanation of this phenomenon by approximating our map with the one earlier studied by Kesten, where very slow energy growth has been found. This is joint work with Maxim Arnold (UT Dallas).
