Winter is coming: a dynamical systems approach for better El Niño predictions
Thursday, September 4, 2014 - 4:00pm
Malott 532
Climate scientists are convinced that El Niño is coming this year, but predictions vary as to how strong the event will be. Despite having its origins off the coast of Peru, El Niño has significant impacts on the global climate (including winter temperature and precipitation in NY). This talk will take a dynamical systems approach to analyzing a low-dimensional system of ODEs modeling the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon. We will focus on understanding the complicated oscillatory pattern and discuss how recent mathematical developments can lead to better predictions for the strength of upcoming El Niño events.
Refreshments will be served at 3:30 PM.
