This talk will survey some local and global problems concerning semilinear elliptic PDEs and minimal hypersurfaces. An emphasis will be placed on how the local and the global aspects are often related. We will also discuss extensions to other geometries and higher dimensions of the Hoffman-Meeks half space theorem and how the catenoid plays a central role.
