What is a broken circuit?

Broken circuits were introduced by Whitney in 1932 as a way analyzing the chromatic polynomial of a graph. Since then they have appeared unexpectedly in a variety of mathematical settings especially in topology, geometry, and combinatorics. We will take a tour of some of these connections.
