Separability of groups

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 - 4:30pm
Malott 406

A group $G$ is called subgroup separable if every finitely generated subgroup $H$ can be expressed as the intersection of all finite-index subgroups containing it. I'll talk about the topological interpretation of this definition and Peter Scott's result that surface groups are subgroup separable. I will also talk about related recent work on quantifying separability of the identity subgroup in groups where the identity is known to be separable.

Refreshments will be served in the lounge at 4:00 PM.
