Relaxation behavior in conceptual climate models
Friday, March 14, 2014 - 1:30pm
Malott 206
This talk will discuss relaxation and canard-related behavior in a variety of conceptual climate models. First, a model for glacial-interglacial cycles will be analyzed to demonstrate the existence of a parameter regime in which the model produces mixed-mode oscillations. Second, a classical large-scale ocean circulation model will be introduced and then modified. The model and its modification are non-smooth, spurring an examination of canard-like behavior in non-smooth systems. Finally, a comparison will be drawn between single-neuron models and a conceptual model for the polar ocean.
