Solving geometric variational problems by gluing

Thursday, February 27, 2014 - 4:00pm
Malott 532

In this talk I will describe a schematic approach to a widely used technique for constructing new solutions of geometric variational problems from known ones, called "gluing." I will focus on two examples to give an idea of the issues involved: First, a result of Joyce to construct metrics of constant scalar curvature; then a four-dimensional result which creates new examples of metrics which are critical points for a certain L^2-curvature functionals.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 PM.
