In the first part of the talk we will survey recent results on representations of finite (simple) groups. In the second part we will describe some applications of these results in group theory, number theory, and algebraic geometry. In particular, we will discuss recent work of the speaker and his collaborators on conjectures of Kollar and Larsen, and Waring-type problems.
