The Banach-Tarski paradox and von Neumann's problem

Tuesday, September 17, 2013 - 4:30pm
Malott 406

Groups that admit a non-zero finitely additive translation invariant measure are said to be amenable. I will discuss the historical developments that led von Neumann to ask the following question: Are there groups that are nonamenable and do not contain nonabelian free subgroups? If time permits, I will describe a new geometric solution to this question.

Refreshments will be served in the lounge at 3:55.
