The Thurston norm is a semi-norm on the second homology—or equivalently, the first cohomology via Poincaré duality—of a 3-manifold. Under certain conditions, it becomes a genuine norm. A classical result tells us that nonsingular closed 1-forms with rationally related periods define a fibration of the manifold. In this talk, we will introduce the Thurston norm and its properties, explore how the Thurston norm detects the different ways a 3-manifold can fiber, and how it connects to the dynamics of pseudo-Anosov flows.
