Brion gave a resolution of Richardson varieties ( = Schubert intersect opposite Schubert) using Bott-Samelson manifolds. While this is a lovely story (which I'll recall), it involves a lot of choices. I'll give an alternate resolution free of choices, although only to a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack ("orbifold"), based on a definition of G_m quotient based on equivariant stable maps of genus zero curves. In the Grassmannian case this gives new examples of GKM spaces.
